Stoma Pancaking! What is stoma pancaking?

Stoma pancaking is a very common problem for colostomy bag wearers, often making things extremely uncomfortable for a colostomy bag patient. It’s caused by the end of the colon opening becoming blocked with stool as it enters the stoma bag. This results in pressure build-up around the stoma opening, which is typically due to a change in a patients stool consistency, directly attributable to dietary intake changes, and/or fluctuating hydration levels (fluid intake).  

Hence, stoma pancaking typically occurs between a patient’s stoma opening into their colostomy bag, and the inner surface of the bags outer wall, located directly adjacent to the stoma opening. As such, stool tends to immediately stick to the bags inner wall surface as it enters the bag from the colon. This can in turn create a seal that prevents stool exiting the colon and moving to the bottom of the bag. Additionally, this sometimes causes a vacuum effect within the stoma bag, often further compounding the blockage and causing even more discomfort for the patient.

‘Stoma AirClip’ – What is it and how does it work?  

They say that the best designs are the simplest, and Stoma AirClip is no exception to this rule. It’s simple yet highly effective design does what it needs to do in reducing or illiminating colostomy pancaking. It uses a lightweight flexible ABS plastic support that lifts the external bag wall away from the stoma opening. This enables a consistent air gap to be maintained between the stoma opening into the bag and the bags inner wall surface. This then enables gravity to more effectively move stool waste to the bottom of the bag (where you want it), significantly reducing stool build-up restrictions and stoma pancaking (Hoorah!). 

A Velcro tab (loop side) is permanently attached to the underside of the AirClip, and the other ‘soft’ self-adhesive Velcro tab is simply stuck to the outer surface of the stoma bag, directly over the stoma opening into the bag (See ‘How it works’ images page). This then enables the Stoma AirClip to lift the outer surface of the bag away from the stoma opening (you just stick a new 5mm Velcro tab onto each new stoma bag, and use the same plastic AirClip continuously).
